Kurt Vonnegut, the man is amazing.

  2. [LeRose] Says:

My dear, dear fellow…”modern” English is indeed “Shakespeare,” and only Shakespeare.

Stephen King is not modern. He is contemporary. Every single author on your list is contemporary, save Shakespeare.

And no, I don’t think Stephen King is one of the best authors in contemporary English.

  3. Rae Says:

Lol, all of the authors I was going to list are already within your own.

And hell, Stephen King is a great author.

  4. Ange?Ushiromiya Says:

I have to say William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet was a masterpiece

  5. The Zomby Woof Says:

chuck palahniuk diary is such a great book

  6. Vernan Says:

    Hemingway….
The Old Man and the Sea
    is enough to prove that.

    On Stephen King…
He is prolific, but I don’t think he has attained the level of anyone on your list.

I love your list the one guy that said Shakespeare is modern is incorrect, Shakespeare is Elizabethan, Charles Dickens is Victorian, James Joyce and H.P.Lovecraft are Modern, John Steinbeck and Harper Lee are Post Modern, Vonnegut and Stephen King are Contemporary(although part of Vonnegut’s work falls in the post modern era).

I have to Disagree with the dispargment of the quality of the writing of Mr. King. All of his novels are just as enjoyable now as when they were written, Having read more than his horror novels, including short stories, prose and essays I have to say He’s an exceptional writer. Many said of Shakespeare the same sentiments that one answer said about Mr. King, they were proven wrong. Just because a piece of literature has mass appeal does not make it as disposable as the rest of popular culture. Shakespeare being the entertainment of the masses in the Elizabethian period is proof of that.
