Writers: How do you start off a novel?

Sunday, July 25th, 2010
????? m?? asked:

I like to write short stories and novels, and the only problem I ever have is how to start it off. How are you supposed to start off a novel properly, so it grabs the reader in and it isn’t boring?

Thanks!
To cathrl69: This isn’t like asking about how sprinters run fast. I’m asking how you’re supposed to start off a novel, without it seeming stupid or boring, okay? I’m wondering how to begin a story so it’s interesting. So f*ck off.

Another poster answered a question of mine and suggested that some parents should educate their kids about other people’s belief and value systems–based on the books they read.

It made me curious:

Should writers write their books according to the current belief/value system (providing that one clearly *identifiable* foundation/entity exists…?), or ones based on their own?

Different locations, different experiences, timed writing, blogging, writing ‘assignments’, music, and everything else I can think of…is there anything I maybe havent tried yet?
